LAE Learners featured in Museum L-A's latest exhibit!

Come see Museum L-A's new exhibit, "Rivers of Immigration: Peoples of the Androscoggin," exploring the flow of diversity in Lewiston-Auburn.

Generations ago, people from Ireland, Canada, Greece, Lithuania, Italy and many other lands were the new people in town. Different languages and cultures set them apart. Over time, their assimilation into the community became the community. New immigrants are now calling Lewiston-Auburn home.

HEAR the stories and SEE the faces of the people who have joined our community. FOLLOW a Timeline that traces the flow of diversity in L-A. ADD your own story to the Interactive Writing Wall.

Many students from the Lewiston Adult Learning Center are involved and have shared their stories to help make this exhibit possible!

Free program for adults interested in health care careers

With the Maine Department of Labor predicting that the Health Care & Social Assistance industry in Maine will grow by 17.8% by 2016, there has never been a better time for Mainers seeking secure jobs with family-sustaining wages transition to a career in health care.

According to the Maine Center for Economic Policy in 2006, a livable wage for a family of four in the Lewiston-Auburn area was considered $15.66/hour. The average wage in Maine for a radiologic technician is $19/hour, and for a Registered Nurse is $25/hour. There are countless other health care jobs that pay $20+ per hour, and all of these jobs offer employees opportunities to advance. There is no such thing as a "dead end job" in health care.

Right now health Care is an ideal field for an adult looking for a secure job with family-sustaining wages. Since most of these positions require at least some college, and many adults are reluctant to return to school after being away from the classroom, Lewiston Adult Education is offering free support in their "Transitions to College & Careers: Health Care Edition" program.

This program will help adults use their prior experience and knowledge to determine which types of health care jobs they would find most satisfying. Participants will also refresh the academic reading, writing, health science, math and computer skills needed for college-level work.

Representatives from area hospitals and from the local colleges will also be available each week to meet with program participants to help answer any questions they may have about college and health care work.

Time will also be devoted to helping participants actually fill out their college applications and financial aid forms. Participants will also learn about scholarships and financial assistance designed specifically for adults.

The next session of the "Transitions to College & Careers: Health Care Edition" program begins September 3rd. This program is offered at no cost to the participant. For more information, or to learn how to apply, visit or call Mina Matthews at 753-6420.
