Culinary Arts

LAE's Culinary Arts Certificate program will be starting Tuesday, January 24th. Space is still available!

At our state-of-the-art facility, The Green Ladle, prepare yourself for the culinary workforce in restaurants and other food services. This course will give you hands-on experience in the art of knife skills, sanitation, grande manager, and the making of soups, sauces, appetizers, breads, desserts, and more. You'll also make connections with local chefs as they guest instruct classes to share their valuable knowledge and experience.

Students who successfully complete the Culinary Arts course will have the opportunity to complete an additional 18 hours of training, which will earn them the Culinary Catering Plus Certificate. During this additional experience, participants will work as interns as they host catering events for customers.

This program is designed to make you a competitive candidate for employment in the restaurant industry. Jumpstart your new career in the exciting and creative world of Culinary Arts!

Fall Sports & Fitness!

Lewiston Adult Education will be offering a variety of health and fitness classes this fall. For those looking to get in shape or those interested in trying out a new form of exercise, Lewiston Adult Education has something for everyone!

Fall fitness classes will include:

Couch to 5K will help participants join the millions of people who use road race training to get or stay in shape. This is a good first step for those who are interested in trying out road racing, but need some support getting started.

Golf for Beginners will take place at Roy’s, and is designed for new golfers who have some familiarity with golf and golf terminology, but need some help getting to the next level.

Hula Hooping to Heal will provide an introduction into this new and fun form of exercise. Participants in this class will also have the opportunity to sign up for the Make Your Own Hoop workshop, which will meet prior to the start of the Hooping class.

Pilates is an excellent way to strengthen core muscles and develop flexibility.

Tai Chi is a Chinese Marital Art known for its health benefits. This introductory class will focus on the basic movements of Tai Chi and Chi Kung.

Vinyasa Yoga Flow blends elements of Tai Chi, Kindalini Yoga, DanceYoga, Tri-Yoga Flow, Vinyasa Yoga and Shiva Rea’s Yoga Trance Dance, to provide a fun-filled movement meditation.

Women’s Self-Defense and the Real World will help participants develop practical behavioral and defensive techniques to protect themselves in a threatening situation.

Zumba for Beginners will utilize the principles of aerobic fitness interval training and resistance training to burn calories while sculpting and toning the body.

New Computer Classes!

LAE will be offering three brand-new computer classes this fall!

Introduction to HelpDesk is designed for individuals interested in becoming an Information Technology professional. In today's highly competitive job market, having the right skill set and training can make all the difference. Abner Goodwin will be teaching a new course specially tailored for people who want to start a career in the Information Technology field. This course will help prepare participants to earn the A+ Certification, which is recognized throughout the industry. It tells employers that the person who is A+ certified has the basic knowledge and training required to support and maintain computer hardware and software. Prerequisites: PC Troubleshooting and Maintenance I & II or equivalent experience.

We are also offering two new courses featuring Open Source software- meaning that they will utilize software that you can download at home for free!

Photo Editing with Open Source Software: Part I will teach participants how to use GIMPshop. GIMPshop is a free/open source program, intended to replicate the feel of Adobe Photoshop. You will explore all the beginning level tools and features found in the costly professional grade photo-editing applications- but available for free using GIMPshop. You'll be able to download the application at home to practice your new skill during and after the class. Early class topics will focus on gaining comfort in navigating the application tools, progressing into photo-editing theory, and concluding with simple image compositions. (www.gimpshop.com)

Desktop Publishing with Open Source Software: Part I will utilize Scribus. Scribus is a free open source program intended to replicate the feel of Adobe InDesign or QuarkExpress. This class will introduce you to desktop publishing, using tools usually found in costly professional desktop publishing applications. Even better, you'll be able to download the application at home for free to practice your new skill during and after the class. Early class topics will focus on gaining comfort in navigating the application tools, fonts and typography, best practices in page composition, and finishing with a simple flyer or newsletter.
